Rawalpindi to Get New Rs. 3.45 Billion Flyover at Ammar Shaheed Chowk – Major Infrastructure Boost

Rawalpindi is set to witness another major infrastructure upgrade as the Punjab government has officially approved a brand-new flyover worth Rs. 3.45 Billion Flyover at Ammar Shaheed Chowk. The project is part of the city’s massive Rs. 35.28 billion development package aimed at reducing traffic congestion and improving mobility across Rawalpindi and its cantonment areas. With traffic pressure increasing every year, this latest approval brings significant relief to thousands of daily commuters.
The Ammar Shaheed Chowk flyover will further strengthen the ongoing network of road modernization projects already under construction across the city. According to officials, work on the new flyover is expected to begin next year once all final technical and administrative clearances are completed. The interchange currently handles heavy volume throughout the day, making it one of the most critical bottlenecks in Rawalpindi’s transport flow.
City-Wide Transformation Underway
This new flyover is among several major developments taking place simultaneously. The Punjab government and city authorities have been accelerating construction on four flyovers and eight underpasses, all designed to streamline movement between key residential, commercial, and cantonment zones.
Out of the planned structures, one flyover and two underpasses have already been completed, contributing to improved traffic flow in parts of the city. Work is actively ongoing on two additional flyovers and three underpasses, with teams working round the clock to meet the targeted deadlines. Additionally, three new underpasses are scheduled to begin construction on December 20, marking yet another leap forward in the city’s infrastructure expansion strategy.
Completed Projects Boosting Traffic Flow
One of the most prominent completed projects is the Nawaz Sharif Flyover at Khawaja Corporation Chowk, constructed at a cost of Rs. 4.4 billion. The structure has already started delivering benefits by reducing congestion in one of Rawalpindi’s busiest business corridors. The GPO Chowk and TMA Chowk underpasses were also successfully completed at an investment of Rs. 5.7349 billion, significantly easing movement between central and adjoining localities.
Major Projects Nearing Completion
The ongoing Kachehry Chowk flyover and underpass, launched recently on November 3 with a budget of Rs. 5.974249 billion, is progressing quickly and is expected to open to the public by April 30, 2026. This critical junction often experiences severe traffic jams due to its connection with government offices, courts, and commercial centers.
Similarly, the Jinnah Park flyover and underpass, costing Rs. 4.672245 billion, will be completed by March 30, 2026. This project is expected to reduce travel time between the eastern and southern sectors of the city, benefiting thousands of commuters and improving access to entertainment areas, schools, and housing colonies.
Underpasses & Road Expansion at Iftikhar Janjua Road
Another important development is the Iftikhar Janjua Road underpass and expansion project, valued at Rs. 2.688073 billion. Scheduled for completion by January 30, 2026, this project will resolve one of the city’s persistent traffic choke points, especially during peak hours.
Part of a Larger Vision for Rawalpindi
All these development projects are part of a broader vision to transform Rawalpindi into a modern, efficient, and accessible urban center. With population growth and rising vehicle numbers, the existing road network has long struggled to keep pace. The introduction of multiple flyovers, underpasses, and widened roads promises to reshape the city’s mobility landscape for decades to come.
The new flyover at Ammar Shaheed Chowk, costing Rs. 3.45 billion, is expected to be one of the most impactful additions in this transformation due to the heavy traffic pressure at the junction. Once completed, it will significantly reduce delays, enhance safety, and ensure smoother flow between major routes like Saddar, Chaklala, and Murree Road.
Economic and Social Impact
Apart from improving traffic, these development projects are expected to:
- Reduce fuel consumption caused by long traffic jams
- Lower air pollution by cutting idle vehicle time
- Support economic activities by improving access to markets
- Enhance land value and business opportunities along upgraded corridors
- Create thousands of jobs during the construction phases
The Punjab government has emphasized that modern infrastructure is essential for attracting investments, improving quality of life, and ensuring long-term growth for Rawalpindi.
What’s Next?
As more projects approach completion and new ones begin, residents can expect noticeable improvements in the city’s traffic flow by mid-2026. The government aims to complete most ongoing projects within the next 18 to 24 months.
The new flyover at Ammar Shaheed Chowk stands as another strong step toward making Rawalpindi a well-connected, commuter-friendly city capable of supporting its growing population and economic activity.
