Big Update: Punjab Introduces EV Sweepers & Mechanical Cleaning — Clean Punjab Initiative Begins

Punjab has taken a major step toward modern and clean cities as Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz officially launches the Clean Punjab Initiative, replacing the old broom-based system with eco-friendly EV sweepers, mechanical cleaning machines, and digital monitoring tools. This marks a historic change in how streets, roads, and neighbourhoods will be cleaned across the province.
For the first time in Punjab’s history, electric sweeping vehicles and modern mechanical sweepers will be used at large scale. These machines are more efficient, environmentally friendly, and capable of cleaning wide areas quickly — something manual sweeping could never achieve. The CM said this transformation will help create cleaner, healthier, and greener cities for all citizens.
A major highlight of the new plan is the decision to provide cleaning services seven days a week, including Sundays. This is the first time that Punjab will have a continuous cleanliness system operating in every street, alley, commercial area, village and urban neighbourhood. The goal is to remove waste build-up, reduce pollution levels, and ensure that every area remains clean throughout the week.
Another important part of the project is the Waste-to-Value system, where garbage will be converted into energy. The Chief Minister has asked for a detailed plan by mid-January for the installation of modern plants that will turn waste into useful resources. This step will reduce land pollution, improve recycling, and cut down the pressure on landfill sites.
Strict action will now be taken against people who throw waste on roads or in markets. Anyone found littering will face legal action within 15 days, and special teams will monitor violations. The number of sanitation workers in each union council will also increase, and proposals are being reviewed to provide one tractor for every two UCs to support heavy cleaning operations.
Punjab is also introducing waste enclosures around garbage bins and containers to ensure proper waste collection. These fenced structures will stop waste from spreading on the roads and improve the overall look of cities and towns.
Punjab Replaces Brooms with EVs
The initiative also supports environmental sustainability. EV sweepers use electricity instead of fuel, which reduces carbon emissions. Mechanical sweepers help keep dust low on roads, improving air quality. The Waste-to-Value project will convert trash into energy, making Punjab’s waste management model more productive and eco-friendly.
Citizens will soon see sweeping machines on more roads, garbage containers enclosed properly, workers wearing digital ID systems, and monitoring teams checking performance regularly. The provincial government is also planning to expand street-washing services, install more dustbins in public spaces, and introduce new awareness campaigns in schools and markets.

To ensure transparency, cleanliness services are now fully digitalised. Workers’ salaries and payments are being processed electronically, and a Vehicle Tracking Management System has started monitoring all sanitation vehicles in real time. Live location tracking will ensure that machines are working on their assigned routes. Waste management companies are also being evaluated through KPI-based scoring, which means their performance will now be judged through clear marks and indicators.
With the Clean Punjab Initiative, the province is setting a new standard for sanitation by combining modern EV technology, strict enforcement, digital oversight, and continuous cleaning services. Citizens are already giving positive feedback, calling the project a major step toward building a cleaner and greener Punjab.
